Hearing Partners of South Florida Supports Men’s Health Month
Advice Worth Hearing During National Men’s Health Month
June 2011
An overlooked component of men’s health care is a focus on hearing health – despite the fact that six out of ten people with hearing loss are men. During June, National Men’s Health Month, Hearing Partners with offices in Delray Beach, FL and Boynton Beach, FL encourage men to consider hearing health as an integral part of their overall well-being, which includes scheduling regular hearing screenings and taking steps necessary to protect your hearing on a daily basis. Even simple steps such as avoiding loud environments, wearing hearing protection or simply turning down the volume can go a long way to protecting hearing health.
Hearing Partners hopes to motivate men to address their hearing loss and to take action this month. Numerous studies have shown that untreated hearing loss can lead to isolation, depression, anxiety and frustration. Health loss can negatively impact relationships with family and friends and even hurt your ability to succeed in the workplace. A national study by the Better Hearing Institute reported Americans with unaddressed hearing loss make less money than people with normal hearing, negatively impacting household income, on average by $23,000 per year.
Hearing Partners urge men with hearing loss to take the first step toward better hearing by calling our office at 561-638-6530 and schedule an appointment for a hearing health checkup. Experience a complimentary screening and listening demonstration
for one of the most advanced hearing solutions available.
Hearing instruments do more than enhance your ability to hear conversation, even in noisy social situations. The newer hearing devices can connect wirelessly to cell phones so that you stay connected while you’re on the go. For example, Oticon Agil’s wireless connectivity also enables high quality audio streaming from the television directly to the wearer’s hearing devices so he can enjoy his favorite shows with family and friends - without turning up the volume so loud it drives others out of the room.
As an added incentive to take action, leading hearing solutions manufacturer Oticon will donate a portion of proceeds from the sale of any Agil hearing device during June and July to the American Cancer Society to support prostate cancer prevention and treatment.

Losing Your Edge . . . or Could It Be Your Hearing?
Experts agree that one of the most effective ways to boost cognitive function is to maintain a healthy social network. But the challenge of understanding and following conversation in social settings often causes people with hearing loss to drop out of an active life.
“When people are experiencing hearing loss, the extra effort needed to decipher words and keep track of who is speaking can be mentally exhausting,” says Dr. Nimet Adam of Hearing Partners of South Florida in Delray Beach, Fl. “Because they can’t keep up with the give-and-take of everyday social and business interactions, they assume they are losing their edge.”
Dr. Adam recommends that before investing in electronic games and gadgets to tone up cognitive muscles, adults who feel they are not “keeping up” should consider a hearing check-up. “With the many discreet advanced technology hearing solutions now available, there is no reason why anyone should allow untreated hearing loss to drain away energy that could be used to stay engaged and active,” Dr. Adam states.
Dr. Adam has recently begun to fit patients with the new Oticon Agil hearing instruments. Agil is the first hearing instrument designed to enable people with hearing loss to minimize the cognitive energy expended in typical listening environments without compromising speech understanding.
“Agil processes sound the way the human auditory system naturally does,” explains Dr. Adam.
“By preserving natural speech cues, less energy is needed to translate and interpret the meaning of sounds – allowing the brain to perform other important cognitive tasks.”
Staying connected to modern life through high-tech communication and entertainment devices is another way that people experiencing hearing loss can maintain an active, vital lifestyle. New Oticon Agil connects wirelessly to TVs, cell and landline phones and other popular devices through the Oticon Streamer, an optional accessory that resembles a sleek MP3 music player. “With increasing regulation of cell phone use while driving, I find that patients especially like Agil’s ‘hands free’ cell phone option,” notes Dr. Adam,
Dr. Adam reports that Oticon Agil can accommodate approximately 90 percent of hearing losses. The new hearing solution is available in a range of styles – from small mini behind-the-ear device that is almost invisible on the ear to a tiny CIC model that is worn completely in the ear canal.

Dr. Nimet Adam, Audiologist, Donates Time and Talent to Benefit Argentinean Children with Hearing Loss
Over 100 Hearing Impaired Children in Need Receive Expert Care and Oticon Hearing Solutions
Dr. Nimet Adam of Hearing Partners of South Florida in Delray Beach recently demonstrated that when it comes to caring for people with hearing loss, her care and compassion know no borders. Dr. Adam joined a contingent of 100 US hearing professionals attending the OtiCongress conference in Buenos Aires who donated their services to benefit children in need at the Mutualidad Argentina de Hipoacusicos (MAH), a Buenos Aires-Based non-profit agency caring for Argentina’s neediest population. Working side-by-side with audiologists from the non-profit organization, Dr. Adam and the other US volunteers provided hearing care and instruments to more than 100 children from a local school of the deaf. Hearing aid manufacturer Oticon, Inc. donated the hearing instruments to enable the volunteer team to care for even the neediest children.
“Our colleagues from the Mutualidad Argentina de Hipoacusicos staff also served as interpreters for us,” stated Dr. Adam. “But we really didn’t need anyone to interpret the joy of the children as they experienced the world through their new hearing instruments for the first time. Their happiness and the gratitude of their parents made the entire experience a joyous one for us as well.”
Dr. Adam, who treats children and adults in her Delray Beach practice, worked throughout the day at a special clinic to insure that each of the 100 children received care and attention. Over the coming months, the MAH audiologists will continue the care of the youngsters fitted with the Oticon hearing instruments, following their progress and adjusting the instruments to best suit the needs of each child.
